What's in a name?

About 2 months ago, we had our first heiffer calf born on our farm. She was the first, after 6 bull calves!
I had wanted to name her Penny. She's copper colored, half Jersey, half Milking Shorthorn.
None of the boys wanted to name her that. They didn't like the idea of naming our nice little calf after money!
One of the boys suggested we call her Holly. I thought that was a cute name, something I could live with. But none of the other boys liked it.
Our second son is very much an easy-going, reliable youth. Very responsible, and doesn't throw a fit about much. 2 things I can think of that he's a stinker about are:
1. When there's not ENOUGH food to make him comfortable on the inside, and
2. The naming of people and animals!

THIS child was the main objector to those 2 names.
Finally one night at the dinner table, I said "We are going to name the calf RIGHT NOW. We aren't leaving the table until it's done."
Oldest son went to get the name book. He suggested lots of nice names. Second son objected to every one, and wouldn't back down.
From the beginning, second son wanted to call her 'Red'. (choke, puke, gasp...is naming her a color any better than naming her after money??)
The tossing of names lasted for a half hour, with even Daddy siding with me on the names Penny or Holly. Finally we gave up. Dad and I got up from the table and said "Fine, you boys can name her."
Guess who won?
Yup, the second son. Our frisky, cute, healthy little girl calf has the name of a COLOR!
RED
I'm laughing out loud. I'm picturing second son in 3-4 years, bringing Red in from the field... "Good ol' Red!" "Reliable Red"
She's probably going to be a great cow. Why he thinks that's a nice name????? Beat's me.
I guess he got his way THIS time!

That's funny! I have a neighbor who has a big red bull and that is what I call him when I see him! "Big Red"! I don't know what my neighbor calls him though.

God Bless!
